What a New Installation Includes

  • Measuring each roof edge and planning where water must go.
  • Choosing the material, profile and colour.
  • Fixing brackets to the fascia or rafters at the right spacing.
  • Setting a fall towards each outlet.
  • Cutting outlets, fitting corners, stop ends and downpipes.
  • Directing downpipes to a drain, soakaway, channel or tank.

Assessment Before Quoting

A proper quote starts with the roof. The installer checks the length of each edge, roof pitch and area draining to each section, the fascia condition, the height and access, and where water can be discharged.

Rotten or missing fascia has to be fixed first, because gutters are only as secure as what they are screwed to. See fascia board installation and repairs.

Materials and Profiles

Material

  • Aluminium. Light, does not rust, usually roll-formed on-site. See aluminium gutters.
  • Chromadek. Pre-painted steel, strong, needs care at cut edges. See Chromadek gutters.
  • Galvanised steel. Sectional, often on older or utility buildings.
  • PVC. Sectional, sold in lengths, lowest material cost. See PVC gutters.

Profile

OGEE (curved, decorative face) is the most common profile on South African homes. Box or square-line profiles suit modern buildings. Half-round is mostly PVC. Larger roofs may need a bigger profile, such as a 150 mm instead of a 125 mm gutter.

Seamless or sectional

Metal gutters are usually roll-formed into seamless runs on-site. PVC and some steel systems are joined from fixed lengths, with more joints that can leak over time.

Falls, Outlets and Brackets

  • Fall. A slight, even slope towards each outlet so water does not stand. Too little fall leaves pools, too much looks crooked.
  • Outlets. Long runs need more than one outlet, often with the fall running both ways from the middle.
  • Brackets. Spaced to the manufacturer's guide, usually closer for PVC and in heavy-rain or leaf areas.
  • Downpipes. Enough of them, sized for the roof area. See downpipe installation.

Installation Process

  1. Measure and quote. From a site visit, or from plans and photos for simple jobs.
  2. Prepare. Fascia repairs and removal of any old gutters.
  3. Form or cut. Seamless gutters are rolled to length on-site; sectional lengths are cut.
  4. Hang. Brackets, gutters, corners, stop ends and outlets go up and are sealed.
  5. Downpipes. Fixed to the wall and connected to the discharge point.
  6. Test. Water is run through to check the fall and joints.

A typical single-storey house is often done in a day. Double-storey and complex roofs take longer.

Ballpark figures, not quotations. Compiled from price guides and retailer listings published on South African websites (updated between March 2025 and January 2026), checked 15 October 2026 and rounded. Sources disagree, and most installed rates come from Gauteng guides, so quotes in your area can differ. Unless a row says so, the sources do not state whether VAT is included, so confirm VAT on every quote. Photos or a site visit and a written quote set the actual price.

What Affects the Quote

  • Total metres and number of corners and outlets.
  • Material, profile and colour.
  • Single or double storey, and scaffolding needs.
  • Number and length of downpipes.
  • Fascia repairs and removal of old gutters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does gutter installation take?

Most single-storey houses take a day. Double-storey homes, complex rooflines and jobs with fascia repairs can take two or more days.

Which gutter material is best?

It depends on budget, appearance and exposure. Aluminium does not rust and is common for seamless gutters. Chromadek is strong pre-painted steel. PVC is cheapest in materials but has more joints. Ask each installer to quote the same material so you can compare.

How many downpipes do I need?

That depends on the roof area draining to each gutter and the outlet size. Long runs usually need a downpipe at each end or one in the middle. The installer should show you where they plan to put them.

Can gutters be fitted without a fascia board?

Some brackets fix directly to rafters, but most installations rely on a sound fascia. If the fascia is missing or rotten, it should be replaced first.

Do I need plans approval for gutters?

Gutters on an existing house do not usually need building plans. Complexes and estates may have rules on colour and profile, so check with the body corporate or HOA.
