How Gutter Installation Works

1. Assess. The contractor measures each roof edge and checks the fascia, height, access and where water can go.
2. Choose material and profile. Aluminium, Chromadek, galvanised steel or PVC, in OGEE, box or half-round.
3. Prepare. Old gutters come off and rotten fascia is repaired.
4. Install. Brackets, gutters, corners and outlets go up with a steady fall to each downpipe.
5. Test. Water is run through to check the flow and joints.

Ask each contractor which material they will use and how many downpipes they plan.

Gutter Materials

• Aluminium. Light, does not rust, pre-painted and usually roll-formed seamless.
• Chromadek. Pre-painted zinc-coated steel. Strong, but cut edges need care.
• Galvanised steel. Sectional and strong. Rusts once the zinc wears.
• PVC. Sectional lengths with clip fittings. Cheapest to buy, more joints.
• Profiles. OGEE is the usual residential shape; box suits modern and commercial buildings.

Seamless or Sectional

• Seamless. Metal coil is formed on-site into one length per roof edge. Joints only at corners, outlets and ends.
• Sectional. Fixed lengths joined with fittings. PVC and some steel systems. More joints to maintain.
